Bert & Ernie love each other...Tumblr made me rethink Sesame Street.
Ernie writes a poem.
This poem is basically the pinnacle of love. I’m so upset.
One of my most recent fixations has been on this concept, The Dynamic, which is essentially a relationship archetype seen among both fictional characters and real people. Its defined origins are in the Sherlock Tumblr fandom, but its existence predates John & Sherlock. In my humble opinion, the Dynamic was invented when love was.
Bert & Ernie is a classic example of the Absolute Nightmare/Sweaterboy dynamic. Which, if you are unfamiliar, will make zero sense to you until you keep obsessing over it and then you see Them everywhere.
It’s better that The Niche explains The Dynamic for you, but I must tell you that this video broke my heart.
It’s so simple. And it’s so beautiful, the way Bert perks up in 3:10. He isn’t looking for love or validation in that moment, but Ernie gives it to him freely and unexpectedly. And Ernie has no idea how kind that gesture is—kind because it’s true!
Cue “The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades” and my tears of joy at being a witness to a love so pure.
Also simple googling “predatory wasp of the palisades sufjan stevens bert ernie” has informed me that the fine folks at The Niche have compiled a list of more life-giving Bert & Ernie clips. Bless them.
